- Venture Capital – This Week in Venture ...

This week we have Michael Montgomery, President of Montgomery & Co. For more information, show notes, and an upcoming schedule, go to www.thisweekin.com. For detailed shownotes check out Mark Suster’s blog post www.bothsidesofthetable.com If you don’t know Montgomery & Co it is one of the premier technology & media focused investment banks in the country (and as Michael corrected me they also have a strong Healthcare / Med tech practice). For entrepreneurs who want to learn about how to work with investment banks, how to position yourself to be acquired and what the IPO markets look like this is the episode to watch. Michael is a very accomplished corporate executive in his own right having run Sega Gameworks and helped IPO EuroDisney as well as having been on the founding team of DreamWorks SKG (where he helped them raise their first 0 million in equity). Shame they didn’t like his suggested name for the company: DreamWorks SKG-MM We discussed: 1. The importance of the conference is that it assembles most of the top privately held early-to-mid-stage technology companies in the country (and some globally) as well as most VC’s, growth equity funds and corporate development departments from large industry players looking at technology acquisitions. You have to be selected to present and it is typically reserved for companies that have already

Who governs digital trust? Doctorow framed the question this way: “Computers are everywhere. They are now something we put our whole bodies into—airplanes, cars—and something we put into our bodies—pacemakers, cochlear implants. They HAVE to be trustworthy.” Sometimes humans are not so trustworthy, and programs may override you: “I can’t let you do that, Dave.” (Reference to the self-protective insane computer Hal in Kubrick’s film “2001.” That time the human was more trustworthy than the computer.) Who decides who can override whom? The core issues for Doctorow come down to Human Rights versus Property Rights, Lockdown versus Certainty, and Owners versus mere Users.

An original documentary by Matthew Hawes that gives a detailed and insightful look into one of the most bizzare chapters of Beatles history. Was the Beatle Paul McCartney really killed in an automobile accident in 1966 and replaced by a lookalike? Did the remaining three Beatles then plant cryptic and hidden messages into the songs and album covers to some of their later albums? Was it all one big marketing scheme, or did it spring from the minds of enthusiastic fans? Follow along, listen and look at the many clues, and see what conclusions you come to about this fascinating subject. Who was the Walrus? — Or is it just CRANBERRY SAUCE? Written, edited, produced and directed by Matthew Hawes Narration and original music by Al Chantrey NOTE: Thanks to YouTube user “Rubbercustard” for alerting me to a mistake with regards to a date given in my video. I erroneously gave the date as April 10, 1969 for the day Paul McCartney officially quit the Beatles. The actual date was one year later, on April 10, 1970. This was a slip-up, and I apologize for the mistake. Also, “Rubbercustard” points out that Fred LaBour made a mistake in telling F. Lee Bailey that Paul McCartney was the only left-handed member of the Beatles. Ringo Starr is also left-handed. If anyone else notices any actual errors with the documentary, please feel free to alert me to them. Thank you.
